I Did It Thy Way

The Words of the song of the late Frank Sinatra and also Elvis Presley said, Yes there were times, I’m sure He knew, when I bit off more than I could chew, but through it all, when there was doubts, I ate it up and spit it out, and through it all I stood tall and did it …………..MY WAY. Ah, let’s look at a little different way today, let’s look at “THY WAY”.

The Bible commands us to be filled with the Holy Spirit:

Eph 5:18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is excess, but be filled with the Spirit,

So we must understand what the Bible teaches and obey what the Bible commands. The Filling of the Holy Spirit is really the key to a dynamic Christian life, and really to the degree, we are consciously depending upon the crying out to the Holy Spirit, to that degree the fruit of the Spirit will be developed in our lives:

Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faith,
Gal 5:23 meekness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Gal 5:24 But those belonging to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and lusts.
Gal 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

For the most part, as far as Christians go if you show me a Christian that is concerned with having the power of the Spirit in their life then generally speaking you will see a Christian who is filled with the joy of the Lord and is bold in his witnessing.

That person is going to pray for the filing of the Spirit because they are conscious of their need for grace. A person who has no conscious need of the Spirit and thus does not think about or pray for the Spirit should question their salvation.

Kala, our Christian sister, daughter, and friend from Ohio is down for a few days for a visit and we spoke for probably two to three hours about the Holy Spirit the other night.

We can spend so much time preaching and teaching on prayer, loving God, people, serving the Lord and the “doing” of Christian things that we can ignore the importance of the Grace we need daily and the Power of The Holy Spirit filling in our lives.

The literal Greek translation of do not be drunk with wine but “be filled with the Holy Spirit” is…be, being filled with the Holy Spirit. This is an on going repeatable experience we have we God.

We as people, as the eyes of our understanding, are enlightened, recognize the Great Need of the Holy Spirit’s help in our life. In fact, it is the only way to live the Christian life, empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Listen to this Scripture:

Luk 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Now no man comes to the Lord unless the God the Holy Spirit draws him:

Joh 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

So we are drawn to God by the Power of His Grace. We are not forced to come to Him and have no say so about it:

Rev_22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will let him take the water of life freely.

We are drawn by God by Grace, called by His Grace, Chosen by His Grace and give Faith to believe by His Grace but have a will to accept or reject his Grace.

Some believe that after the Fall of Adam and Eve that a person is so depraved, set apart from God that even their will is affected that they can’t choose God or Christ as their Savior.

Now I would agree with that except God intervenes in the situation and draws Him by His Grace and gives a person the ability to accept or reject Him.

We see the Importance of the Work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. The Holy Spirit does things for us that we can never do ourselves each day.

You could not be saved today without the work of the Holy Spirit in your life today. There would be no power over sin in your life today except for the working of the Holy Spirit:

Rom 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

There is no real Godly love, joy or peace in our lives today except for the Holy Spirit:

Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Gal 5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

You cannot understand the Word of God, the Bible without the Holy Spirit teaching you:

Joh_14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

That word Comforter above means He is our intercessor, our consoler, our advocate. He is the one who pleads for or in behalf of another person in the plan of God.

He wants to lead and guide us:

Rom 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

The Holy Spirit comes to Help us:

Heb_13:6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

Heb_4:16 Let us, therefore, come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

To tell the truth of all the things I read, email, posts, phone calls, texts, I see for the most part, the problem in people’s lives is not having a dependence upon the Holy Spirit in their lives. They are dealing with things, living life or trying to overcome things by their willpower, without the help of the Holy Spirit.

Nowhere in the Bible does it tell us to seek Salvation, the Father draws us to Salvation but Jesus tells us to ask or seek the Holy Spirit:

Luk 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Jesus is telling us to Ask for the Holy Spirit, asking is the first stage of receiving. James says you have not because you ask not.

Upon Salvation, or receiving Christ you are born of the Spirit:

Joh 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Joh 1:13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

But after this New Birth, there is a command to be filled with the Holy Spirit:

Eph 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess, but be filled with the Spirit;

I don’t know you can start out this day and try to make it on your own as you live life and tackle the obstacles of life, the tests and trials, the situations and circumstances and when the dust settles you can put on a Frank Sinatra song and you and the late Mr. Sinatra can sing I did it My Way.

But for me I am going to call out to God today and ask for Grace and for God to fill me afresh today with His Precious Holy Spirit because I need His Power, His Teacher, His Helper, His Guide, His Advocate, His Provision today for my life. At the end of the day, I don’t want to sing the song “My Way” but I will sing the song of “Thy Way”.

Lord let your will be done on earth today in our lives, the lives of my brothers and sisters on earth as it is in Heaven.
