I listen to people quite often and they speak of their failures in this life. Even though they try with all of their might not to be a certain way or do a certain thing they keep failing and feeling defeated.
In this journey of life if we want change in our lives we will have to have a revelation of this truth:
Zec 4:6 Then he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel saying, ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the LORD of hosts.
When you find yourself failing to being conformed to the image of Christ you hopefully will come to a place of understanding they you need the potter to shape and mold this vessel of clay that we are:
Isa 64:8 But now, O LORD, You are our Father, We are the clay, and You our potter; And all of us are the work of Your hand.
We so often as vessels of clay try to do the work of the potter in our lives which is just as ridiculous as actual clay trying to change itself.
A person cannot change themselves as a sinner and make themselves a saint of God. I know we hear today how we are winners and overcomers and we can do it but I’m just going to stick with the words of Jesus on this subject:
Joh_15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
I know in the society in which we live it would imply weakness to say I need someone in my life to make it, but it is exactly the place God wants to take us for us to see the great need of God in our lives.
Many years ago while struggling as a Christian, failing as a Christian I was confused. I was doing all the things my Christian teachers were telling me to do but still failing.
I was going to church, reading my Bible, praying and doing all I knew to do not to sin but still living a defeated life.
But one day the Lord began to speak to my heart about how to get victory over sin. By that I don’t mean I became perfect and never sin any longer but how to have the ruling and reigning power of sin broken.
I had received Christ as my Savior when I was 17 years old. I went into the military for two years and when I got out I began to associate with old friends.
I got involved with drinking and taking drugs and it destroyed my life for many years. In November of 1981 after losing every valuable thing in life that I held dear to my heart I cried out to God.
God, in His great power, delivered me instantly out of drug, alcohol and cigarette addiction. I found out that day a very real truth from the Word of God. Listen to the Words of Jesus:
Joh_8:36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
I found out on a warm winter morning in Miami Florida that what five different drug programs could not do, what I could not do after years of trying that God could do instantly. That was an amazing revelation for me.
So after turning to the Lord and experiencing this great deliverance, this new found freedom, this metamorphosis to this new creature I was sad to find myself in the same place as the Apostle Paul:
Rom_7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
I was a Christian and found myself in this same dilemma that Paul spoke of being in himself:
Rom 7:15 For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate.
It’s not a very nice place to be in life, this place called defeat. We don’t want to think of ourselves as failing, so many times we just live with our failures and our defeats because we do not know the way of victory.
When after this great deliverance from God I found myself in sin again and struggling to get the victory, the Lord spoke to my heart one day with these words, the Word was to return to the place where I got deliverance, victory and freedom from the drugs, alcohol and cigarettes.
The place I found victory and deliverance was a faith in Christ and what He accomplished on that Cross. That brought me instant help, victory and deliverance from the sin that held me in bondage. I found out a great truth that day and the days to follow and it was this:
Rom 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.
I had never heard a teaching or any preacher ever teach or preach of this great Law of God that set me free from the Law of Sin and death.
When I have asked others when I have preached in different churches if they had ever heard a teaching or preaching on this subject of the Law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus I have had very little response with a yes.
How can this be? The greatest law in the world was the Law of sin and death. You sin you die. But a greater law came into being that crushed the ruling and reigning power of sin in our lives and it was the greater law being the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus.
In my next post I am going to share on this great help afforded to us through Christ and His Finished Work on the Cross.
